sweets
   A variant of ‘sweet’, ‘sweetheart’, etc., commonly used as an endearment. It is used by a man to a woman in The Mackerel Plaza, by Peter de Vries, the two being on intimate terms. A husband says it to his wife in The Philanderer, by Stanley Kauffmann. In another novel by Peter de Vries, The Tunnel of Love, a woman asks a man: ‘Are you O.K., sweets? There are six further examples of ‘sweets’ used as an intimacy in The Limits of Love, by Frederic Raphael. all by the same woman to her husband.
